Volvo are to release their very first 5 door hatchback this
year and have the BMW 1 series and Audi A3 in their sights.
The entry-level 113bhp diesel will offer road tax-free
emissions of only 95g/km with 78mpg. Two further diesels and three petrol’s are
available, all with stop-start and brake energy recuperation. As usual one of
Volvo's main aims with this model is safety, but this time it's not just the
people inside the car but also the pedestrians outside the car. If sensors in
the front bumper sense an impact with a human leg, the rear edge of the bonnet
lifts, and an air bag pops out to cover the hard areas at the base of the
windscreen and the front pillars.
To Help them stand out they have given it a very different
rear end. The V40 should be ready for delivery from July. But does all that
premium talk include a premium price? Slightly, yes – expect the V40 to start
from around £19,500.
